When Charles Darwin told us we were closely related to apes, we fell into a terrible nightmare: "They" are really "us"! One hundred years later, denial, arrogance and selfishness have led us to take the lives of millions of chimpanzees. Fratricide is finished and if we do not stop immediately, one day soon wake up from our nightmare only to discover that we have destroyed the only living link with our evolutionary past. Washoe has been and is my constant reminder that humans are not alone in our time on earth. Over the last six million years have been with us on this trip a spiritual siblings and we call chimpanzees.
