Thomas Wright marveled in 1750 that Democritus of Abdera have believed that the Milky Way is composed mainly of unresolved star:

"Long before that astronomy had taken advantage of the improved optical sciences, so to say he saw the eyes of reason, penetrating as far as infinity astronomers were then more capable in more profitable times. "
