Jean-Jacques Rousseau (Geneva, Switzerland, 1712 - Ermenonville, France, 1778)
French writer and philosopher. ►
In year 1754 Jean-Jacques Rousseau wrote in the first paragraph of Discourse on the Origin and the inequality of men :
"While rightly to discern the natural state of man to study matter in its origins ... I will not follow your organization through the successive phases has known .... On this particular would only get lost in vague and almost visionary speculation. So far, comparative anatomy has not progressed much, and the observations of naturalists seem too flimsy to be used as a valid platform on which to build a strong case. "
The preventions of Rousseau, made more than two centuries, are still valid. However, there have been significant advances in research of the anatomy of the brain and the behavior of man and animals, aspects of Rousseau, quite rightly, conceived it as vitally important in the context of the question. May no longer be premature to attempt a preliminary synthesis.
