Buzz Aldrin with U.S. flag ►
One day after landing, July 21, the lunar explorers prepared for their departure from Tranquility Base. "They are allowed to take off," said the voice from mission control. Aldrin said, "Roger, understood. We are number one for takeoff. " It was 13.54 when the top of the module rose Eagle Sea of Tranquility. The engines had been tested three thousand times, so that they could not fail. The lower section of the lunar artifact which had deposited was exactly 21 hours before, now become a permanent monument on the moon, with these words inscribed:
.
HERE MEN FROM PLANET EARTH
PUT FIRST ON THE MOON PIE
July 1969
AD We came in peace for all mankind

When raising that afternoon Eagle, the American flag Neil Armstrong planted fell demolished. Rested their stars and stripes on the bottom undaunted Sea of Tranquility, an image that suggested both the American pusillanimity as fierce and indomitable will of the Moon. About four hours later, the Eagle , and as passive vehicle, arrived for his appointment with the mother ship Columbia , on the other side of the moon.
